When I was in elementary school, I had all sorts of lunches. I’ve always loved leftovers, so I would happily welcome the lasagna or pizza we’d had the night before. However, there was nothing like a sandwich and all its infinite possibilities! Salami, roast beef, cheese, tuna or egg salad with lettuce to keep it from getting soggy and of course peanut butter with anything. There was nothing like pulling your sandwich out of the plastic baggy and seeing what was for lunch and of course checking for the note wishing you a good day at school!
The rules for this contest is there are no rules. So I decided to create a sandwich that present-day Ethan could take back to the future and bestow upon 10 year old Ethan. And along with the sandwich, some words of wisdom to my younger self…
Truth 1 – There is nothing like traditional white sandwich bread for a school lunch.
Truth 2 – Whether you’re 9 or 90 years old, a grilled cheese is always a brilliant choice.
Truth 3 – Although you grew up in a Kosher home, you’ve managed to incorporate bacon into your adult life.
Truth 4 – Avocado will rule the world.
Truth 5 – Corn relish makes anything better.
Truth 6 – You will eat a deep fried pickle and your life will never be the same…For the better.
Truth 7 – A knife is just a fancy toothpick.
Truth 8 – Cutting the crust off your sandwich will make you forever young.
Truth 9 – A sandwich cut on the diagonal just tastes better. It’s a fact.
Truth 10 – You’ll be taking lots of pictures of your food. Don’t fight it.
After it was all said and done, my ultimate DIY sandwich consisted of two grilled cheese sandwiches, bacon, avocado, corn relish, mayonnaise and deep fried pickles for good measure!
I think my young self would have approved of the sandwich I made for him.
Anyone can make a sandwich, that is the beauty of the sandwich! The DIY Sandwich contest runs till November 6. All you have to do is make a sandwich and post it to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #DIYSandwich and they’ve provided some inspiration with this DIY Sandwich video.
Disclaimer – I was provided financial compensation by Dempter’s to create a sandwich and write about this contest. However, all sandwich thoughts about white bread, bacon, deep fried pickles and cutting a sandwich diagonally are my own.
